Nishio Castle
概要
Nishio Castle was reputedly built around 1252 by Ashikaga Yoshiuji, Mikawa Province's military governor, making it one of the oldest castle sites in Aichi Prefecture with connections to the Ashikaga shogunal lineage. The castle town is also famous as Japan's premier matcha (powdered green tea) production center. After many changes of lordship through the Sengoku era, the Ōgyu Matsudaira clan governed Nishio (60,000 koku) through the Edo period. Restoration work has brought back several structures including corner turrets and gates. The intersection of warrior culture and tea ceremony culture makes Nishio a uniquely layered historical destination.
