Echizen-Ōno Castle
概要
Echizen-Ōno Castle in Fukui Prefecture was built in 1576 by Kanamori Nagachika after quelling the Ikkō-ikki religious uprisings on orders from Oda Nobunaga. The two-story, three-floor tower sits atop Mt. Kameyama (249m) overlooking the Ōno basin. Famous nationwide for its 'sea of clouds' phenomenon in autumn and early winter, when only the tower emerges above the mist — an ethereal sight rivaling Takeda Castle. The castle town retains its Edo-period grid layout, earning the nickname 'Little Kyoto of Hokuriku.' Echizen has a centuries-old blade-forging tradition known as Echizen Uchihamono.
與刀劍的關聯
Echizen-Ōno Castle's sword heritage centers on Echizen Province's deep-rooted blade-forging tradition. Echizen Uchihamono (forged blades) traces back to the Kamakura period, with the legendary smith Chiyotsuru Kuniyasu credited as its founder. The tradition encompasses swords, agricultural tools, and kitchen knives — a breadth that reflects the region's practical, martial culture. Castle lord Kanamori Nagachika's battle experience gave him a pragmatic appreciation for functional blades. The Ōno domain's later lords supported local smiths through the Edo period. The Echizen blade-forging tradition is now a nationally designated traditional craft, still practiced in working studios open for visits.
