春日山城
Kasugayama Castle
概要
Kasugayama Castle was the stronghold of Uesugi Kenshin, revered as the 'God of War,' and is counted among Japan's five greatest mountain castles. The grand layout, fortifying the entirety of 180-meter-high Mount Kasuga, is considered the supreme masterpiece of Sengoku-era mountain castle design. Kenshin valued righteousness above all — his legendary act of sending salt to his rival Takeda Shingen during a blockade gave rise to the Japanese proverb 'sending salt to one's enemy.' A devout follower of Bishamonten, Kenshin prayed at the castle's Bishamondō hall before every campaign. The ruins offer sweeping views of the Kubiki Plain and the Sea of Japan, the very landscape Kenshin once surveyed.
與刀劍的關聯
Uesugi Kenshin, who believed himself an avatar of the war deity Bishamonten, was one of the Sengoku era's greatest warriors with an extraordinarily deep knowledge of swords. Among his collection, the tachi Sanchōmō (Mountain Bird Plumage), forged by the Bizen Ichimonji school, is a National Treasure renowned for its magnificent chōji-midare hamon. Himetsuru Ichimonji is another celebrated Uesugi heirloom blade. The legendary single combat between Kenshin and Shingen at Kawanakajima is the most famous episode of sword-wielding warriors in Japanese history. The Uesugi sword collection is considered unmatched among daimyō families in both quality and quantity, with many pieces now housed at the Uesugi Museum in Yonezawa.
