Nanao Castle
概要
Nanao Castle on Castle Mountain (approx. 300 m) in Ishikawa Prefecture was the stronghold of the Hatakeyama clan, rulers of Noto Province for over a century. Founded around the early Muromachi period, it controlled the entire Noto Peninsula from its mountain heights above Nanao Bay. The castle is particularly famous for its connection to Uesugi Kenshin, the 'Tiger of Echigo,' who besieged it for over a year before capturing it in 1577 after internal strife weakened the garrison. Kenshin is said to have composed his famous poem 'Shimoha Gun'ei ni Michite' ('Frost fills the army camp, autumn air clear') upon capturing the castle. The ruins, designated a National Historic Site, preserve extensive stone walls, dry moats, and earthworks from the medieval period, with panoramic views over Nanao Bay.

Nanao Castle's connection to Uesugi Kenshin provides a powerful context for understanding Hokuriku sword culture. Kenshin's famous prized blade Sanchōmō (by the Bizen Ichimonji master Noritsune) is one of the most celebrated swords in Japanese history — its blade pattern said to resemble bird feathers. Noto's Hatakeyama clan were cultural patrons, supporting local craftsmen including swordsmiths. The Hokuriku region encompassing Echizen, Kaga, and Noto formed a distinct sword culture zone; Kaga in particular flourished under the Maeda clan, producing masters like Gō Yoshihiro. The Nanao Art Museum preserves cultural artifacts from the Hatakeyama era and related Hokuriku crafts.
