Yoshida Castle
概要
Yoshida Castle, built in 1505 on the banks of the Toyokawa River in what is now Toyohashi, was one of the key strategic fortresses on the Tokaido. The castle exchanged hands numerous times — from the Makino and Toda clans to Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces, then Ikeda Terumasa of the Toyotomi era, before settling with the Matsui-Matsudaira clan through the Edo period. As a hub connecting Mikawa, Totomi, and Owari, its castle town thrived as a Tokaido post station. The reconstructed iron turret (kuroganeyagura) on the honmaru site preserves the atmosphere of this Mikawa stronghold.
與刀劍的關聯
Yoshida Castle was the seat of Mikawa warriors, one of Japan's most formidable samurai traditions. The castle's lords — including members of Tokugawa Ieyasu's inner circle such as Sakai Tadatsugu — were renowned fighters who treated their swords as embodiments of martial spirit. The Mikawa region produced 'Mikawa-mono' blades known for their rugged practicality. Ikeda Terumasa, lord of Yoshida before his famous tenure at Himeji Castle, developed his military acumen here. The Matsui-Matsudaira clan collected fine swords throughout the Edo period. The Toyohashi City Museum of Art and History holds associated arms and armor.
