Kashima Jingū Treasure House
Overview
The treasure house of Kashima Jingū, the premier shrine of Hitachi Province. Dedicated to Takemikazuchi, the god of martial arts, the shrine has received dedicatory swords since antiquity. The National Treasure chokutō with black-lacquered tachi mounting is a Nara-period straight sword and one of the oldest extant blades in Japan. At approximately 2.7 meters in total length, this colossal sword commands an overwhelming presence. Essential for understanding the origins of the Japanese sword.
