Understanding the Japanese sword authentication system
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai) is a public interest foundation dedicated to authenticating and preserving Japanese swords. Established in 1948, it is recognized worldwide as the highest authority in sword appraisal.
Reserved for swords of exceptional historical and artistic merit. Awarded through rigorous annual reviews with a very low pass rate.
A higher grade for swords of particularly fine quality. Requires upgrade review from Hozon status.
Swords the NBTHK deems worth preserving. Suitable for entry-level collections.
To submit for appraisal, apply directly to NBTHK or through an affiliated dealer. Reviews are held several times a year, with results issued as certification papers. We can handle the submission process on your behalf.
