Exporting Japanese Swords — From METI Permits to International Shipping
Exporting Japanese swords requires a permit from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Swords subject to the Cultural Properties Protection Act may also require Agency for Cultural Affairs approval.
METI application: Submit a copy of the sword registration certificate, photographs, and an application specifying the destination country and purpose. Processing typically takes 2-4 weeks.
Import regulations by country: - United States: Antiques (over 100 years) are relatively straightforward. Others are importable if not regulated by the ATF. - Germany: Subject to the Weapons Act (WaffG). A collector's license may be required. - France: Classified as Category D2. Declaration required but no permit needed. - Taiwan: Import as cultural property is relatively free. Customs declaration required.
Packaging and shipping: Swords are placed in custom wooden crates with cushioning. We use insured EMS international mail or specialized art shipping services.
We handle all these procedures on your behalf. You simply wait for your sword to arrive safely.
