Caring for Your Japanese Sword — Proper Maintenance to Preserve a Masterpiece
Japanese swords are made of steel and can develop rust without proper care, potentially causing irreversible damage. Perform maintenance at least once a month.
Required tools: Uchiko (polishing powder ball), choji oil (clove oil), nugui-gami (wiping paper), and mekugi-nuki (pin remover).
Procedure: 1. Remove the mekugi pin and handle to expose the blade 2. Carefully wipe off the old oil with nugui-gami (always wipe from the spine side) 3. Lightly tap uchiko along the blade, then wipe clean with fresh nugui-gami 4. Apply a thin, even coat of choji oil 5. Return the blade to its shirasaya for storage
Storage tips: Avoid direct sunlight and maintain 40-60% humidity. When stored horizontally, keep the edge facing up. Avoid mothballs for long-term storage, and check condition every three months.
Proper maintenance is an expression of respect for the sword. Passing on a masterpiece in the best possible condition to the next generation is both a privilege and a responsibility of ownership.
