Your First Japanese Sword — A Beginner's Guide to Choosing Wisely
Taking your first step into the world of Japanese swords — what should guide your choice?
Set a budget: For beginners, Hozon-certified swords typically range from ¥500,000 to ¥1,500,000. Always choose a sword with NBTHK papers. Avoid uncertified blades regardless of price.
What to look for: The beauty of the hamon, quality of jihada, balance of form, and state of preservation. Rather than fixating on one aspect, view as many swords as possible to train your eye.
Trustworthy dealers: Choose shops that exclusively handle NBTHK-certified swords, have clear return policies, and can explain each sword's provenance. Membership in a sword dealers' association is also a good indicator.
Choosing size: Beginners should start with a katana (uchigatana). They're easier to handle than tachi and display well. Standard blade length is around 65-70cm.
Take your time and search for the blade that speaks to you. A fine sword has a way of resonating the moment you hold it.
