柳川城
Yanagawa Castle
概要
Yanagawa Castle was built in the wetlands of Chikugo Province (southern Fukuoka), using an intricate network of canals as natural defenses — making it a classic 'water castle.' The castle is most closely associated with Tachibana Muneshige (1567–1643), hailed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as 'the peerless warrior of the western provinces.' Muneshige fought brilliantly in the Korean campaigns and for the Western Army at Sekigahara, was stripped of his domain, but remarkably regained his original Yanagawa fief — a unique achievement in Japanese history. Today Yanagawa is beloved as the 'City of Water' for its tourist punt boats navigating the historic canals.
與刀劍的關聯
The sword culture of Yanagawa centers on Tachibana Muneshige, 'the peerless warrior of the western provinces.' His martial lineage traced to the sword saint Tsukahara Bokuden through his teacher Marume Kurando Sakanaga. The prized family heirloom Raikirumaru ('Lightning Cutter') was originally Tachibana Dōsetsu's sword, legendarily used to cut down lightning. The blade passed to Muneshige and remains a revered treasure of the Tachibana family. The Yanagawa domain swordsmiths forged practical blades using local iron sand. The Tachibana Family Museum and the Ohana estate (former Tachibana villa) display the family's swords, armor, and battle dress.
