Saga Castle
概要
Saga Castle, completed in 1611 by Nabeshima Katsushige, was the seat of the powerful Saga domain (357,000 koku) in northwestern Kyushu. The Nabeshima clan presided over one of Japan's most profound warrior cultures, producing the philosophical classic Hagakure — whose maxim 'The way of the samurai is found in death' became the world's most famous expression of bushidō. The Hizen province under Nabeshima rule also became one of Japan's most important sword-producing regions, with the school of Hizen Tadayoshi (Tadayoshi-den) producing blades prized throughout the country. The castle's reconstructed honmaru palace is one of Japan's largest wooden restorations.

Saga Castle is the birthplace of two pillars of Japanese sword culture. First, the Hizen Tadayoshi school — founded by the smith Tadayoshi (Hashimoto Shinzaemon) under Nabeshima patronage in the early Edo period — produced blades renowned for their beautifully clear 'Hizen jihada' (the distinctive wood-grain steel surface) and elegant hamon. Hizen swords were distributed nationwide via the sankin-kōtai system and remain among the most collected Edo-period blades today. Second, the Nabeshima domain produced Hagakure, the philosophical masterwork declaring 'The way of the samurai is found in death,' which established the sword as not merely a weapon but the very soul of the warrior. The Chikoan Museum (Chikkōkan) in Saga houses Nabeshima family swords and related artifacts.
