岡城
Oka Castle
概要
Oka Castle rises on a plateau 325 meters above the deep gorges of Taketa in Oita Prefecture, its magnificent dry-stone walls stacked along the ridgeline in a sight that has moved visitors for centuries. Founded in 1185 according to tradition, and developed into a major castle by the Nakagawa clan after the Battle of Sekigahara, Oka Castle's greatest fame comes from an unexpected source: composer Taki Rentarō, who spent his boyhood exploring these ruins, drew inspiration for 'Kōjō no Tsuki' (The Moon Over the Ruined Castle) — one of Japan's most beloved art songs, still sung across the country today. The bronze statue of Taki Rentarō stands watch over the castle ruins, while cherry blossoms in spring and snow in winter envelop the towering stone walls in scenes of haunting beauty — the very atmosphere the song immortalized.
與刀劍的關聯
Oka Castle's sword connections flow from three sources: the fierce martial culture of southern Kyushu that shaped its samurai, the Nakagawa clan's legacy as battle-hardened warriors under Toyotomi Hideyoshi (from whom they likely received prestigious sword gifts), and the regional tradition of 'Bungo swords' — the blades forged in Bungo Province during the Nanbokuchō and Muromachi periods are known for their robustly practical character, prized by Kyushu warriors for hard fighting. A selection of Nakagawa clan swords and armor is preserved in Taketa City's history museum. On a more poetic level, the song 'Kōjō no Tsuki' — born from these ruins — resonates deeply with the Japanese sword's identity as an object that transcends utility to embody 'mono no aware,' the bittersweet awareness of impermanence. The moonlit stone walls and the gleaming hamon of a masterwork blade are expressions of the same aesthetic sensibility.
