Sword Etiquette — Essential Manners When Handling Japanese Swords
Handling Japanese swords involves centuries-old etiquette traditions.
Requesting to view: Politely ask the owner's permission. When the sword is offered, receive it on a fukusa (silk cloth).
Drawing procedure: Break the habaki seal (thumb on the koiguchi), then slowly draw with the edge facing up. Never draw quickly.
Viewing etiquette: Never breathe on the blade (causes rust). Observe the hamon by tilting toward a light source. Change angles to view jihada.
Don't touch the blade: Bare skin oils cause rust. If touching is necessary, use a clean cloth.
Returning the sword: After viewing, carefully resheathe and return with both hands, expressing gratitude.
These customs express respect for the sword and courtesy toward its owner. Please remember them when attending appreciation events.
