Shinsengumi and Their Swords — Blades Beloved by Bakumatsu's Warriors
The Shinsengumi was an armed police force active in late-Edo Kyoto. Their swordsmanship and beloved blades continue to fascinate people today.
Kondo Isami and Kotetsu: Shinsengumi captain Kondo Isami reportedly wielded a Nagasone Kotetsu, one of the finest shinto-era blades. Its cutting ability was legendary.
Hijikata Toshizo and Kanesada: Vice-commander Hijikata favored an Izumi-no-Kami Kanesada (XI). Highly regarded as a practical Mino-tradition blade, it accompanied him to the Battle of Hakodate.
Okita Souji and Kiyomitsu: First unit captain Okita is said to have used a Kashu Kiyomitsu. The famous tale of his sword breaking at the Ikedaya Incident is well known.
Saito Hajime and Kijinmaru Kunishige: Third unit captain Saito wielded a Kijinmaru Kunishige. He was feared for his left-handed "single thrust" technique.
