Ne Castle
Overview
Ne Castle, built in 1334 by Nanbu Moroyuki during the Nanbokuchō civil war, is a National Special Historic Site in Hachinohe, Aomori. It is among the best-preserved and most faithfully reconstructed medieval castles in Japan — with the main hall, workshops, smithy, and stables rebuilt using 14th-century techniques based on meticulous excavation data. The Nanbu clan ruled northern Tōhoku for centuries and were famous for breeding the finest warhorses in Japan ('Nanbu horses'). The excavated smithy within the castle walls confirmed on-site weapons production. Adjacent Hachinohe City Museum provides comprehensive exhibits on the Nanbu clan's history.
Connection to Swords
Ne Castle's excavated smithy is one of Japan's most important archaeological sites for understanding medieval sword and weapons production within a castle. The discovered forging hearths, iron slag, and tool marks confirm active on-site weapons manufacture and repair — essential for a mobile military force that campaigned from Tōhoku all the way to Kyoto. The Nanbu tradition of 'Nanbu Uchihamono' (Nanbu forged blades) reflects a practical, durability-focused sword culture born from harsh northern winters and sustained military campaigning. The reconstructed smithy at the castle park is one of Japan's rarest living exhibits of medieval weapons production. Hachinohe City Museum displays iron weapons and tools excavated from the site.
