仙台城(青葉城)
Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle)
Overview
Sendai Castle was built in 1601 by Date Masamune, the legendary 'One-Eyed Dragon,' and serves as the spiritual origin of the DATEKATANA name. Perched on the cliffs of Mount Aoba, it was a natural fortress — though no main tower was constructed, the honmaru featured a magnificent palace. Masamune was renowned for his deep appreciation of Japanese swords, possessing masterworks such as Shokudaikiri Mitsutada and Ōkurikara. The castle town of Sendai grew into Tōhoku's greatest city and produced outstanding swordsmiths including Kunikane. The Date clan's flamboyant aesthetic gave rise to the word 'datemono' (stylish person), a spirit vividly reflected in the design of their swords. The castle ruins offer panoramic views of Sendai city, with the iconic equestrian statue of Date Masamune greeting visitors.
Connection to Swords
Date Masamune was a celebrated sword collector. His prized Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, forged by the Bizen Osafune master Mitsutada, earned its name when Masamune's cut sliced through both a retainer and a nearby candlestick. The great ōdachi Ōkurikara is another treasured Date heirloom. Masamune patronized the smith Kunikane as the official swordsmith of the Sendai domain, establishing the foundation of Sendai's swordsmithing tradition. Kunikane brought Yamashiro-den techniques to Sendai, and generations of smiths continued forging in the region. Date-clan sword fittings are renowned for their splendid yet refined designs. The Sendai City Museum houses numerous swords and fittings associated with the Date family.
