Tsu Castle in Mie Prefecture is best known as the masterwork of Tōdō Takatora, one of Japan's greatest castle architects, who rebuilt it on a grand scale after 1611. Takatora served seven different lords over his career, navigating the Toyotomi-to-Tokugawa transition with exceptional political skill, and was rewarded with the two-province domain of Ise and Iga (320,000 koku). His engineering philosophy — 'easy to defend, difficult to attack' — is expressed in the tall stone walls and broad moats visible at Tsu today. The Ise region's historic metalworking culture, combined with the castle town's proximity to the sacred Ise Shrine, made Tsu a vibrant center of craft and culture.

Tōdō Takatora was not only a master castle-builder but a seasoned warrior who served seven lords, using sword exchanges as crucial tokens of loyalty and political alliance throughout his career. Tsu domain swordsmiths produced 'Ise-mono' blades combining Yamashiro-den and Bizen-den traditions, rooted in the broader 'Ise Kaji' (Ise bladesmithing) culture that made Ise Province one of Japan's important centers for all types of bladed tools. Takatora's 'practical beauty' philosophy in castle design — strength without unnecessary ornament — mirrors the classical sword ideal of matching cutting performance with beautiful form. He also commanded naval forces in the Korean campaigns (Bunroku-Keichō War), giving his personal weapons a rare cross-sea history. The Mie Prefectural Museum and Tsu City's Takatora-related facilities display associated swords and armor.
