Minamoto no Yoshitsune
The Tragic Hero of the Genji
Description
Minamoto no Yoshitsune was the tragic hero whose brilliant military genius destroyed the Taira clan during the Genpei War. From the cliff-charge at Ichi-no-Tani to the sea battles at Yashima and Dan-no-ura, he achieved a string of astonishing victories through unconventional tactics. His most famous sword was Usumidori (also known as Hizamaru), a treasured blade passed down through generations of the Minamoto clan. The tantō Imanotsukugi is said to have been bestowed upon him during his training at Kurama Temple, symbolizing his youth. After falling out with his brother Yoritomo, Yoshitsune fled to the Fujiwara of Ōshū but ultimately took his own life at the Koromogawa residence. His tragic fate gave rise to the Japanese expression 'hōgan-biiki' (sympathy for the underdog), and his valor and brief life remain deeply etched in the Japanese soul.
