Dotanuki Masakuni
Description
Dotanuki Masakuni was a swordsmith of the Sengoku to Azuchi-Momoyama period (c. 1573–1615), active in Higo Province (modern Kumamoto Prefecture) and the leading master of the Dotanuki school — the quintessential practical combat sword tradition of Kyushu. The Dotanuki name derives from a place in Higo Province, though popular tradition links it to "dōtanuki" meaning "body cutter," reflecting the school's legendary cutting performance. Masakuni's blades are celebrated for their uncompromising practical focus: wide, powerful mihaba with minimal taper, robust construction, itame jihada with abundant coarse nie, and bold gunome-notare hamon with energetic kinsuji and suna-nagashi. Every aspect reflects a single-minded commitment to battlefield performance over decorative refinement. The school gained immortal fame through its association with Katō Kiyomasa — the celebrated Higo daimyo and hero of the Korean campaigns — who reportedly favored Dotanuki swords for their outstanding tameshigiri (test-cutting) performance. This legendary connection established the Dotanuki reputation as "the most battle-effective swords in Japan." DATEKATANA presents Dotanuki Masakuni as the supreme voice of warrior pragmatism in Japanese sword aesthetics — bold, direct, and supremely functional.
