Hakuoki, originally released as an otome game by Idea Factory in 2008, expanded into anime, stage productions, films, and novels. Set in Bakumatsu-era Kyoto, protagonist Yukimura Chizuru finds herself embedded with the Shinsengumi — the elite Tokugawa loyalist sword corps. Characters include historically documented figures: Hijikata Toshizo, Okita Soji, Saito Hajime, Todo Heisuke, Nagakura Shinpachi, and Harada Sanosuke. Despite its otome genre origins, Hakuoki is respected by history enthusiasts for its meticulous attention to actual Bakumatsu history and swordsmanship.
Tennen Rishin-ryu Swordsmanship
The series accurately portrays the Tennen Rishin-ryu school of swordsmanship, founded by Kondō Isami's teacher and practiced by most core Shinsengumi members. Unlike the refined dojo traditions of urban schools, Tennen Rishin-ryu was developed by rural warriors of the Tama region for actual combat survival. Each character's fighting style reflects their historical counterpart: Hijikata's relentless, merciless cutting; Okita's legendary three-stage thrust (sandanzuki); Saito's silent, left-handed single-kill technique. This mapping of historical swordsmanship onto character personality is one of Hakuoki's most impressive achievements.

The eleventh-generation Izumi no Kami Kanesada of Aizu Province is historically documented as the maker of Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizo's personal sword. Hakuoki's portrayal of Hijikata is rooted in this historical fact. Kanesada blades are prized for their powerful geometry and practical hamon, ideal for the brutal combat swordsmanship of the Bakumatsu era.
Kashu Kiyomitsu (Okita's Blade)
Kashu Kiyomitsu of Kaga Province (modern Ishikawa) is associated with Shinsengumi first-unit captain Okita Soji. Okita's legendary three-stage thrust (sandanzuki) and his reputation as a prodigy swordsman connect to Kiyomitsu's nimble, sharp blade style. Hakuoki's Okita character is faithfully based on this historical figure.
Kikuichimonji Norimune (Heian Masterwork)
Kikuichimonji Norimune was a late-Heian/early-Kamakura Bizen smith whose legend states that Emperor Go-Toba himself participated in the forging. Hakuoki references this blade in connection with Okita, lending the story a classical grandeur. Norimune's surviving works are National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, representing the apex of Heian-era sword beauty.
