Nakigitsune
Also known as: Nakigitsune (Weeping Fox); A Tantō by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu; Secret Treasure of the Tokugawa Shōguns
Description
Nakigitsune (Weeping Fox) is a tantō by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu, the supreme master of short blade production in Kamakura-period Kyoto. Yoshimitsu, also known as Tōshirō Yoshimitsu, is credited with elevating the tantō from a secondary weapon to an independent art form. His blades are distinguished by the ko-itame hamon and the luminous white steel grain known as 'Awataguchi-hada,' which glows with an otherworldly brightness unlike any other school. Nakigitsune, a National Treasure at the Tokugawa Art Museum, represents the pinnacle of Yoshimitsu's art: where Masamune pursued volcanic grandeur, Yoshimitsu sought quiet perfection — and found it.
Legends & Stories
The name 'Weeping Fox' has no single certain origin: it may refer to an aspect of the blade's hamon that resembles a fox's face in certain light, to a legend involving a fox associated with the sword's history, or to the sound made when the blade is polished. The irresolution of the name is itself characteristic of the Japanese aesthetic tradition, where multiple meanings layered on a single object are preferred over clean, singular interpretation. Awataguchi Yoshimitsu's tantō represent the Kyoto aesthetic tradition at its apex — where Masamune's Kamakura school pursued volcanic, explosive power, Yoshimitsu refined the short blade toward a luminous quietude that reflects the imperial capital's culture of elegant restraint. The game Tōken Ranbu has brought Yoshimitsu's blades to new generations through the 'Tōshirō series' of characters, with Nakigitsune appearing among them — proof that this fox still has the power to make people weep, now with admiration rather than mystery.
