Matsui-Go
Also known as: Matsui-Go; Prized Blade of the Go School
Description
Matsui-Go is a tachi attributed to Gō Yoshihiro, the enigmatic genius of Etchū Province (modern Toyama Prefecture) who worked in the late Kamakura and early Nanbokuchō periods. Yoshihiro is often listed among the 'Ten Great Disciples of Masamune,' and his blades are distinguished by an incomparably rich steel surface — dense ji-nie, vivid ji-gane, and a depth of nie activity unlike any other school. The sword takes its name from the Matsui family, retainers of the Hosokawa lords of Kumamoto, who kept it in their custody for generations. It is now held at Eisei-Bunko Museum in Tokyo, a repository of the Hosokawa family's cultural treasures, and is designated an Important Cultural Property.
Legends & Stories
Gō Yoshihiro is the most mysterious genius in the history of Japanese swords — so elusive that scholars once debated whether he existed at all. No confirmed birth or death records survive; tradition places him in Etchū Province, but little else is documented. The quality of blades attributed to him argues powerfully for a single exceptional hand, and he is now generally accepted as real. The name 'Matsui-Go' honors the Matsui family, loyal retainers of the Hosokawa lords, who were entrusted with its safekeeping for generations — a rare case where a sword is named not for its maker or its owner but for the faithful steward who preserved it. The Hosokawa lords were among the most cultivated daimyo of the Edo period, masters of tea ceremony, poetry, and Noh; for such a blade to have lived in their collection for centuries speaks to its extraordinary quality and the depth of the tradition it represents.
