Sword Restoration — Can a Broken Blade Be Repaired?
Japanese swords are delicate art objects made of steel. Over centuries, they may sustain various forms of damage.
Chip repair: Small edge chips can be removed through polishing, but large ones may alter the blade's profile. Consult with a togishi before deciding.
Rust removal: Surface rust can be polished away. However, deep pitting rust (mushikui-sabi) cannot be fully removed and affects aesthetic value.
Broken blades: Welding a broken sword is technically possible, but drastically reduces its art value. Preserving the break may better maintain historical significance.
When NOT to restore: Historical battle damage tells the sword's story and serves as important provenance evidence. Hasty restoration can diminish rather than enhance value.
