Regional Swords — The Hidden Appeal of Provincial Smiths
Beyond the Gokaden, many excellent swords were produced by provincial smiths throughout Japan.
Satsuma swords: Masayoshi and the Naminohira lineage. Distinctive ayasugi-style jihada with robust, martial character reflecting the Satsuma warrior spirit.
Tosa swords: Including Sa Yukihide. Developed as official smiths of the Yamauchi clan. Known for practical, solidly-built blades.
Echizen swords: Led by Yasutsugu, Echizen smiths flourished as official Tokugawa smiths. Distinguished by the privilege of using the Aoi mon.
Kaga swords: Kashu Kiyomitsu, Kanewaka and others. Often flamboyant works reflecting the cultural richness of million-koku Kaga.
Sendai swords: The Kunikane lineage. Official Date clan smiths renowned for the beauty of their jihada. The pride of DATEKATANA's home city.
Provincial swords are often more affordable than Gokaden works, making them excellent choices for broadening a collection.
