Legendary Swordsmiths — The Great Masters You Should Know
The history of Japanese swords is also the history of brilliant swordsmiths.
Masamune: Regarded as the greatest swordsmith in history and founder of the Soshu school. Known for powerful nie-based hamon with dramatic kinsuji and sunagashi. His pupils, the "Ten Great Disciples of Masamune," were also master craftsmen.
Muramasa: A renowned smith from Ise Province. The sharpness of his blades gave rise to the "demon sword" legend. In reality, he was an exceptional craftsman who produced superb practical swords.
Kotetsu (Nagasone Okisato): One of the greatest shinto-era smiths. As the saying goes, "You must hold a Kotetsu to know a Kotetsu" — his works reveal their exquisite craftsmanship only in hand.
Osafune Kanemitsu: Head of the Bizen Osafune school. He left numerous grand tachi from the Nanbokucho period, and his flamboyant choji-midare hamon is considered the pinnacle of Bizen-den.
Awataguchi Yoshimitsu: Celebrated as the supreme master of tanto. His beautiful nashiji-hada jihada and refined hamon make his short blades the most treasured in the genre.
Encountering works by these smiths is the ultimate joy for any collector.
