Obi Castle
Überblick
Obi Castle, in present-day Nichinan, Miyazaki, is known as the 'Little Kyoto of Kyushu' for its remarkably preserved Edo-period castle town. The Itō clan ruled the 51,000-koku domain for 280 years from 1588 until the Meiji era. The Obi region was a cradle of southern Kyushu's sword and martial arts culture — the intense rivalry between the Itō and Shimazu clans produced warriors deeply versed in practical combat, and the distinctive Jigen-ryū and Yakumaru Jigen-ryū schools of swordsmanship emerged from this martial environment. The castle's grounds feature towering Obi cedar trees and a beautifully restored main enclosure.

Obi Castle's sword culture was forged in the intense military rivalries of southern Kyushu. The generations-long conflict between the Itō and Shimazu clans demanded constant combat readiness and gave rise to the fierce martial arts traditions of the region, including the powerful Jigen-ryū school of swordsmanship — known for its terrifying opening strike with a battle cry — which spread through the Satsuma, Ōsumi, and Hyūga borderlands that Obi straddled. Hyūga province had its own tradition of swordsmiths producing practical 'Hyūga-mono' blades. The Itō family's sword collection is partially preserved in the Obi Castle History Museum, and the castle town remains a living testament to Kyushu's samurai sword culture.
