Nobeoka Castle
Überblick
Nobeoka Castle, built in 1603 by Arima Naozumi on a plateau above the Gokase River in northern Miyazaki, carries layers of remarkable history. The Arima family descended from the famous Kirishitan (Christian) daimyō Arima Harunobu, and the castle's stone walls are rumored to contain repurposed Christian gravestones — a ghostly echo of the persecution era. The castle is famed for its 'Sennin-goroshi' ('Thousand-Man Killer') stone wall — a legendary defensive feature said to collapse and crush attacking armies. Located in the heart of southern Kyushu's fierce martial culture, Nobeoka was shaped by the powerful swordsmanship traditions of the region, including the terrifying Jigen-ryū school.
Verbindung zu Schwertern
Nobeoka Castle's sword culture reflects a unique intersection of southern Kyushu's martial ferocity and the Arima clan's Christian heritage. The Arima family, descended from the Kirishitan daimyō Arima Harunobu who had contact with Portuguese and Spanish weapon culture, may have possessed Western swords alongside Japanese blades — and their sword fittings sometimes incorporated Christian motifs, producing the rare 'Kirishitan tsuba' category prized by collectors. Nobeoka's location in Hyūga Province placed it within the orbit of the terrifying Jigen-ryū school of swordsmanship, which produced warriors of extraordinary one-strike power. The city's history museum displays Arima and Naitō clan swords and armor.
