Yagyū Munenori
Sword Instructor to the Shōgun
介紹
Yagyū Munenori was the sword instructor to the Tokugawa shōguns who spread the Shinkage-ryū school across the realm. He systematized the art inherited from his father Yagyū Sekishūsai and authored the Heihō Kadensho, elevating swordsmanship from mere technique to a philosophy of governance. Munenori advocated the concept of 'katsujinken' (the life-giving sword), teaching that the sword should not be used to kill but to bring order to the realm and give life to the people. This philosophy was deeply intertwined with the Zen teachings of the monk Takuan. As lord of Yagyū in Yamato Province with 12,500 koku, Munenori was a rare figure who achieved daimyō status through swordsmanship alone. His preferred blades were said to be elegant tachi of moderate curvature, suited to the subtle techniques of Shinkage-ryū. His close relationships with smiths patronized by the shōgunal house profoundly influenced Edo-period sword culture.
