宮本武蔵
Miyamoto Musashi
Sword Saint
介紹
Miyamoto Musashi, author of The Book of Five Rings and undefeated in over sixty duels, is the most iconic swordsman in Japanese history. As founder of the Niten Ichi-ryū, he perfected the art of fighting with two swords simultaneously, pushing the practical use of the katana to its ultimate limits. His legendary duel with Sasaki Kojirō on Ganryū Island is the most famous single combat in Japanese history, though Musashi reportedly used a wooden sword on that occasion. Rather than fixating on any particular famous blade, Musashi valued the skill of wielding a sword above the sword itself. In The Book of Five Rings, he discusses in detail how to choose, hold, and swing a sword, arguing that a blade should be neither too long nor too short, adapted to the situation at hand. Musashi was also a gifted artist — his paintings and calligraphy possess the same piercing spirituality as his swordsmanship. His philosophy elevated the sword from mere weapon to an embodiment of 'the Way.'
