月山貞幸
Gassan Sadayuki
Description
Gassan Sadayuki is a contemporary swordsmith continuing the tradition of the Gassan school — the extraordinary Japanese sword-making lineage originating in Dewa Province (modern Yamagata/Akita Prefectures), whose history stretches back to the Heian period. Named for the sacred Mount Gassan of Dewa Sanzan, the school is world-famous for the "ayasugi-hada" — a breathtaking jihada pattern unlike anything else in sword-making. The ayasugi-hada (cedar-grain skin) is created through a specialized folding technique that produces diagonal, interlocking wave patterns across the jihada surface, giving Gassan blades a mesmerizing depth and visual complexity impossible to achieve through any other method. This technique has been transmitted as a school secret across generations, and Sadayuki is among the contemporary masters who have achieved this technique at its highest level. Following in the tradition of Gassan Sadakazu (a Living National Treasure), Sadayuki represents the living continuation of this ancient lineage. His works in new sword competitions have earned numerous prizes, and he plays an active role in both training young smiths and promoting Japanese sword culture to the public. DATEKATANA presents Gassan Sadayuki as the living heir to one of Japan's most visually distinctive sword traditions — a direct connection between the ancient mountain sacred sites of Dewa and the world of contemporary Japanese sword art.
