唐沢山城
Karasawayama Castle
概要
Karasawayama Castle in Sano, Tochigi, is counted among the 'Seven Great Castles of the Kantō' and one of the largest mountain castles in the region, spanning 600 m east–west and 1 km north–south across 240 m Mount Karasawa. The Sano clan held it through the Sengoku era despite repeated assaults by Uesugi Kenshin, who is said to have attacked it more than ten times without success. Its massive stone walls — some rising 4–5 meters — survive as a National Historic Site. The ruins are also famous for a large colony of feral cats that inhabit the grounds.
與刀劍的關聯
The Sano clan's stronghold stands in an area with ancient metalworking traditions — 'Sano kaji' (Sano smiths) supplied practical blades to the local warrior class for centuries. The repeated sieges by Uesugi Kenshin brought the sword culture of Echigo (Niigata) into direct confrontation with that of Shimotsuke (Tochigi): Kenshin's famous devotion to Bishamonten extended to his reverence for swords as sacred objects, and Echigo smiths under his patronage produced outstanding blades. The castle's patron deity, Fujiwara no Hidesato — the legendary Heian warrior who defeated Taira no Masakado — stands as a symbol of the sword's foundational role in eastern Japan's warrior tradition.
