Mito Castle
概要
Mito Castle, on a ridge between the Naka and Sakura rivers in Ibaraki Prefecture, was the seat of the Mito Tokugawa clan — one of the three senior Tokugawa branch families (gosanke). Founded in the Kamakura period and developed from 1617, the castle became famous as the base of Mito Studies (Mito-gaku), the intellectual current of imperial reverence and anti-foreign sentiment that shaped Bakumatsu politics. The second lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni ('Mito Komon') began the great Dai Nihon-shi historical compilation. The ninth lord Nariaki's son became Shogun Yoshinobu. The castle grounds hold the Kodōkan Academy (Japan's largest domain school) and Kairaku-en garden (one of Japan's three famous gardens).
與刀劍的關聯
The Mito Tokugawa clan holds a singular place in sword history through the famous Shokudaikiri Mitsutada — originally Date Masamune's prized blade, later transferred to the Mito Tokugawa collection. Long believed lost in the 1923 earthquake, it was rediscovered in the Mito Tokugawa storehouse and is now held by the Tokugawa Art Museum. The Mito domain's sword collection was among the finest of the gosanke. Second lord Mitsukuni ('Komon') documented blades alongside his great historical compilation. Ninth lord Nariaki enshrined swordsmanship at the Kodōkan Academy as a pillar of samurai education. The Sakuradamon assassination (1860) by Mito-affiliated ronin is one of the most dramatically sword-defined political events of the Bakumatsu era. The Tokugawa Museum and Ibaraki Prefectural History Museum preserve associated blades.
