神宮徴古館(伊勢神宮)
Jingū Chokokan Museum (Ise Jingū)
Présentation
Guardian of Jingū's Sacred Heritage
Jingū Chokokan Museum opened in 1909 to preserve and display artifacts related to the religious rites, culture, and history of Ise Jingū (Inner and Outer Shrines). Its approximately 35,000 items are closely tied to the Shikinen Sengu, the sacred ritual of shrine rebuilding and renewal of divine treasures performed every 20 years.
Shikinen Sengu and the Sacred Swords
Among the divine treasures (shinki) newly prepared at each Shikinen Sengu are the mitachi — sacred tachi swords forged by shrine-affiliated swordsmiths following ancient methods. Once replaced, these former sacred swords are transferred to Chokokan, where they are preserved as evidence of the deep bond between Shinto and Japanese swordsmithing. Swords donated by emperors, imperial family members, and warrior lords are also held here.
The Art of the Divine Treasures
The collection spans not only swords but also ritual robes, bronze mirrors, jade, spears, horse equipment, and construction tools — all created with the finest materials and techniques, representing the apex of Japanese traditional craft.
Visiting Ise
Chokokan is within walking distance of the Inner Shrine (Naiku) and near Okage Yokocho. Combined with Jingū Agricultural Museum and the Shikinen Sengu Museum, it provides a comprehensive immersion in Ise's sacred heritage.
