Musashibō Benkei
The Warrior Monk of Standing Death
Beschreibung
Musashibō Benkei is the most famous warrior monk in Japanese history, celebrated as the loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Legend tells that Benkei set out to collect a thousand swords on the Gojō Bridge in Kyoto; after gathering 999, he encountered Yoshitsune, was defeated, and became his devoted follower. While best known for wielding a great naginata, Benkei was also said to be highly knowledgeable about the swords he collected. He accompanied Yoshitsune on his flight to Ōshū, and at the Battle of Koromogawa, he died standing upright while defending his master — the legendary 'Standing Death of Benkei' remains the ultimate symbol of samurai loyalty. The great naginata Iwatōshi is attributed to Benkei, its imposing form embodying his massive physique and martial prowess. Benkei's story endures as an icon of loyalty and valor, beloved in kabuki's Kanjinchō and countless other performing arts.
