Tokugawa Museum (Mito Tokugawa Family)
Überblick
Treasures of the Mito Tokugawa Clan
The Tokugawa Museum preserves and displays the art and artifacts of the Mito Tokugawa family, one of the prestigious Three Houses (gosanke) of the Tokugawa shogunate. Founded in 1977, the museum holds approximately 40,000 items accumulated over the Edo period, spanning swords, armor, tea utensils, paintings, and historical documents.
Shokudaikiri Mitsutada — The Centerpiece Blade
The highlight of the sword collection is Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, the legendary blade of Date Masamune. Attributed to Mitsutada, the founder of the Bizen Osafune school, it earned its name from a story of Masamune cutting down a servant together with the candlestick (shokudai) he was hiding behind. Damaged in the 1945 Sendai air raids, it survives in its fire-damaged form and is now displayed as a symbol of resilience. Featured as a character in Touken Ranbu, it drew nationwide fan visits and crowdfunding support for its restoration.
Armor and Fittings
The armor collection showcases the ceremonial suits of successive Mito domain lords, exemplifying Edo-period craftsmanship in metalwork, lacquerwork, and leatherwork. Sword fittings by masters such as the Goto school are also well represented, illustrating the peak of Edo-era metalwork.
Cultural Programs
The museum holds several themed exhibitions annually and maintains a traditional Japanese garden on its grounds. Combined with visits to Kairakuen Garden and Kodokan, it offers a comprehensive introduction to Mito's samurai and scholarly heritage.
