Gotoh Museum
Überblick
The Gotoh Museum was established in 1960 to house the distinguished collection of Gotō Keita (1882–1959), founder of the Tokyu Group. Set on a hilltop in Setagaya with an expansive traditional Japanese garden, the museum holds approximately 5,000 objects including five National Treasures and over 50 Important Cultural Properties. It is renowned above all for its fragments of the National Treasure 'Genji Monogatari Emaki' (Tale of Genji Illustrated Scrolls), the oldest surviving painted illustrations of The Tale of Genji, displayed for a limited spring period each year. The sword collection, assembled with Gotō Keita's connoisseur's eye, includes multiple Important Cultural Property blades spanning the Heian through Edo periods. The museum's architecture by Yoshida Isoya blends seamlessly with the garden, creating one of Tokyo's most serene art-viewing environments.
