別名: River Snow
解說
Kōsetsu Samonji ('River Snow') is one of the celebrated 'Three Great Samonji Swords Under Heaven,' forged by the master swordsmith Sa (Samonji) of the Chikuzen Samonji school in the Nanbokuchō period. The name 'Kōsetsu' (River Snow) derives from the Buddhist name taken by Hōjō Ujimasa (1538–1590), the fourth lord of the Late Hōjō clan, who adopted the monastic name Kōsetsu-sai just before the fall of Odawara Castle in 1590. He then named his beloved sword after himself — a warrior's final act of intimate identification with his blade before taking his own life. After Ujimasa's death, the sword passed to Tokugawa Ieyasu and eventually to the Tokugawa Art Museum, where it remains on display as an Important Cultural Property. Its bold, large gunome hamon and the tragic beauty of its history make it one of the most emotionally resonant swords in Japan.
逸話與傳說
The siege of Odawara in 1590 was one of the defining events of the Sengoku period: Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought an army of a hundred thousand to reduce the last major independent power in eastern Japan. After three months, the Hōjō submitted. Before surrendering, Hōjō Ujimasa shaved his head, took the monastic name Kōsetsu-sai (River Snow Hermit), and named his beloved sword after his new religious identity. Then he died by his own hand. The sword that bore his name passed to Tokugawa Ieyasu — who kept it, kept its name, kept faith with the history encoded in that name. Kōsetsu Samonji thus carries within it two men: the warrior who named it in his final moments, and the conqueror who chose to honor that name. To hold the name 'River Snow' in mind while looking at its bold, wave-like hamon is to feel the strange peace of a warrior who chose monasticism and death over surrender.
