Kanze Masamune
別名: Kanze Masamune; the Sword of the Nō Theater Masters
解說
Kanze Masamune is a tantō by Sōshū Masamune that takes its name from the Kanze school of Nō theater — the foremost of the five Nō lineages, brought to its apogee by Zeami Motokiyo. That a sword of such extraordinary quality should have been preserved by a family of performing artists rather than warriors speaks to the extraordinary breadth of appreciation for Masamune's work across Japanese cultural life. The blade is approximately 24 cm long and shows the Sōshū tradition's characteristic dynamic jitetsu with ji-nie, and a lively gunome-midare hamon with deep ashi and active nie. Today designated an Important Cultural Property and housed at the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya, it represents the meeting point of Japan's martial and performing arts traditions at the highest level.
逸話與傳說
The Kanze family — guardians of the most refined theatrical art in Japan — preserved a sword in their treasury. Zeami Motokiyo, who brought the Kanze school to its peak under the patronage of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, wrote in Fūshikaden of 'hana' — the flower of art — as the quality that perpetually surprises and renews the viewer's experience. Those who have studied Masamune's blades describe exactly this quality in them: the more carefully you look, the more you see, the nie never fully resolved, the jitetsu always offering new complexity. Perhaps the Kanze masters recognized a kindred aesthetic achievement in Masamune's work: two traditions — one of performance, one of steel — that both sought the inexhaustible flower of perfection. The sword passed eventually to the Owari Tokugawa house and now rests in the Tokugawa Art Museum, where the traditions of sword and theater are both honored.
