Tokushima Castle
概要
Tokushima Castle was built in 1586 by Hachisuka Iemasa — son of Hachisuka Koroku (Masakatsu), one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's earliest and most trusted generals. The Hachisuka clan governed the prosperous 257,000-koku domain of Awa Province until the Meiji era. Tokushima is famed for its Awa Odori festival, whose origins are linked to celebrations of the castle's construction. The Hachisuka family's close relationship with Hideyoshi gave them access to some of Japan's finest swords, and the Tokushima City Museum houses a notable collection of the clan's arms and cultural artifacts.
與刀劍的關聯
The Hachisuka clan's sword culture stems from their intimate relationship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Hachisuka Koroku was one of Hideyoshi's first and most trusted lieutenants, and the family's proximity to the man who amassed Japan's greatest sword collection gave them privileged access to exceptional blades. The Awa province also had its own medieval sword-forging tradition ('Awa-mono'), with smiths such as Awa Aritsugu (Kamakura period) and Awa Kunimitsu (Nanbokuchō period) documented in regional records. The Tokushima City Museum's collection of Hachisuka family swords and fittings — particularly lavish Momoyama-period examples — reflects the aesthetic sophistication fostered by the clan's close ties to the age of Hideyoshi.
