Kaminoyama Castle (Kasumijo)
概要
Kaminoyama Castle (Kasumijo, 'Misty Castle') in Yamagata Prefecture was built in 1441 at the southern edge of the Yamagata basin below Mt. Zao. The castle was strengthened by Mogami Yoshiaki, the uncle-rival of Date Masamune who sided with the Tokugawa at Sekigahara. After the Mogami clan's fall in 1622, the Toki clan governed Kaminoyama through the Edo period. The reconstructed three-story tower (1982) overlooks Kaminoyama Onsen, one of Japan's ancient hot springs where warriors once healed battle wounds. The castle town retains samurai-district streets.
與刀劍的關聯
Kaminoyama's most famous lord, Mogami Yoshiaki, was a fierce rival of Date Masamune and maintained his own sword collection as a symbol of competing regional power. The Toki clan, originally from Mino Province, brought the 'Mino-mono' swordsmithing tradition — the dominant practical blade style of the Sengoku era — to their new Kaminoyama domain. The famous warrior-hot spring culture of Kaminoyama Onsen, where generals healed wounds and renewed energy, gives the castle's sword connection a visceral quality: blades were real instruments of the battles fought before these gates. The Kaminoyama Castle Local History Museum holds associated swords and arms.
