Okita Sōji
Captain of the Shinsengumi First Division
Description
Okita Sōji, captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division, was hailed as the strongest swordsman within the legendary corps. He received his full mastery certificate in Tennen Rishin-ryū at the youngest age on record, his natural talent reportedly surpassing even Kondō Isami and Hijikata Toshizō. Okita's lethal technique 'Sandan-zuki' (Three-Stage Thrust) delivered three thrusts in a single instant with godlike speed, proving devastating in actual combat. At the Ikedaya Incident, he led the vanguard and cut down enemy after enemy, though he is said to have coughed up blood during the fight. His famous swords were Kashū Kiyomitsu and Yamato-no-Kami Yasusada, both battle-tested blades that endured brutal use. Struck down by tuberculosis in his youth, he died before the Boshin War began. The image of a brilliant swordsman whose life was cut tragically short resonates with the Japanese aesthetic of beauty in transience, like cherry blossoms scattering in the wind.
