月山貞吉
Gassan Sadayoshi
Description
## Revitalizer of the Gassan Lineage — Gassan Sadayoshi Gassan Sadayoshi (c. 1800–1870) was a master of the Gassan school active from the late Edo through the early Meiji period, and as the father of Gassan Sadaichi (first generation) made a decisive contribution to the technical revitalization of the Gassan school. Having relocated to Osaka, Sadayoshi inherited the ancient Gassan tradition originating on Mt. Gassan in Dewa Province (modern Yamagata Prefecture), elevated it within Osaka's refined sword culture environment, and established the new tradition of "Osaka Gassan." Sadayoshi's greatest achievement was reviving and establishing the Gassan school's distinctive "ayasugi-hada" at a high quality applicable to the modern era. Ayasugi-hada is a unique forging pattern in which the steel flows like the leaves of a cedar tree — a technique known as nearly exclusive to the Gassan school. The technical ability to produce this highly distinctive jigane style stably at high quality was established by Sadayoshi and transmitted to his son Sadaichi and grandson Sadayoshi (second generation). ## Technical Mastery of Ayasugi-Hada Ayasugi-hada is produced through a distinctive process of forging and folding tamahagane, with technical details transmitted as important family secrets. Sadayoshi controlled this technique at a high level, optimizing the direction, density, and depth of the ayasugi flow for each work — realizing ayasugi-hada as genuine artistic expression. The hamon centers on suguha and ko-midare, maintaining the pure dignity of Yamato-den, while nie in the blade interior is uniform and fine. ## DATEKATANA and Gassan Sadayoshi DATEKATANA presents Gassan Sadayoshi as the master who accomplished the technical revitalization of the Gassan lineage, and as the pioneer who transmitted to the modern age the distinctive aesthetic universe of ayasugi-hada unique to Japanese swords. The technique Sadayoshi established was inherited through his son Sadaichi to the present-day Gassan Sadatoshi and Gassan Sadanobu, and the Gassan school's ayasugi-hada continues to radiate an unparalleled presence in the contemporary sword world.
