Yamabushi Kanemitsu
Aussi connu sous le nom de: Yamabushi Kanemitsu; Great Tachi of Bizen Osafune Kanemitsu; Colossus of the Nanbokuchō Era
Description
Yamabushi Kanemitsu is a large-format tachi (ōdachi) by Bizen Osafune Kanemitsu, the preeminent master of the Nanbokuchō period (mid-14th century). The name 'Yamabushi' — meaning mountain ascetic, the wandering practitioners of Shugendo who traverse mountain peaks to acquire supernatural power — evokes both the sword's wild grandeur and the spiritual dimension that Japanese swords carried in medieval warfare. Kanemitsu worked during the civil wars between the Northern and Southern Courts, when demand for large, powerful weapons drove swordsmiths to produce their most physically imposing work. His ōdachi-scale tachi combine the Bizen tradition's characteristic soft steel grain and billowing hamon with a scale and power that overwhelms the viewer. Designated an Important Cultural Property.
Légendes et récits
The Nanbokuchō civil wars (1336–1392), fought between the Southern and Northern Imperial Courts, drove Japanese swordsmiths to produce their most physically powerful work: the ōdachi and nodachi, massive blades that could strike down mounted warriors before they could close. Kanemitsu was the supreme master of this era, and his large-format tachi carry the full energy of a society at war with itself. The name 'Yamabushi' — mountain ascetic — connects the blade to Shugendō, the tradition of mountain practice whose practitioners were believed to have acquired supernatural power through physical ordeal: exactly the quality a warrior would want his greatest weapon to embody. In the Yamabushi Kanemitsu, Bizen craft tradition and Nanbokuchō war energy fuse in a single object, producing a blade that is simultaneously the most functional and the most spiritually charged thing its age could make.
