Ishida Sadamune
Aussi connu sous le nom de: Ishida Sadamune; the Blade of Ishida Mitsunari
Description
Ishida Sadamune is a katana forged by Goro Nyudo Masamune, the most celebrated swordsmith in Japanese history and the founder of the Soshu tradition. The blade takes its name from Ishida Mitsunari (1560-1600), the Toyotomi loyalist who led the Western Army at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. As a classic example of the Soshu tradition, it displays a flowing itame-hada with thick ji-nie, abundant kinsuji and sunagashi within the hamon, and a bright, radiant nioi-guchi. After Mitsunari's defeat and execution, the sword passed into Tokugawa hands and eventually entered the Tokyo National Museum, where it remains today as an Important Cultural Property.
Légendes et récits
Ishida Mitsunari is often depicted as a man of ledgers and logistics rather than a warrior, yet his ownership of a Masamune blade reveals a deeper dimension. In the feudal hierarchy of the Momoyama period, possession of a Masamune sword was a declaration of status that transcended mere connoisseurship; it signified that a lord possessed both the means and the cultural authority to hold what was considered the finest class of blade in Japan. After the catastrophic defeat of the Western Army at Sekigahara on 15 September 1600, Mitsunari's possessions including this blade passed to the Tokugawa victors. The sword thus became a witness to the moment that ended the Toyotomi era and inaugurated 260 years of Tokugawa rule. Now in the Tokyo National Museum, Ishida Sadamune is prized both for its metallurgical excellence and for the drama that clings to its name: a blade made by the greatest smith, owned by a man who gambled everything on a single battle, and lost.
