Hirano Tōshirō
Aussi connu sous le nom de: Hirano Tōshirō
Description
Hirano Tōshirō is a tantō by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu named after the Hirano family — most likely connected to Hirano Nagayasu, one of the celebrated 'Seven Spears of Shizugatake' who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Among Yoshimitsu's many surviving tantō, Hirano Tōshirō is considered one of the most representative examples of his standard style: a refined, slightly thicker-than-usual construction, fine itame-hada grain with delicate nie, and a bright, austere suguha hamon. The blade bears a genuine 'Yoshimitsu' signature and is without question one of his authentic masterworks. It passed through the Tokugawa shōgunate to the Owari Tokugawa collection and is now an Important Cultural Property at the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya, where it stands as a benchmark example of Awataguchi craftsmanship.
Légendes et récits
The mystery of Hirano Tōshirō's name lies in the question of which Hirano family gave it its designation. The strongest theory connects it to Hirano Nagayasu, one of the legendary 'Seven Spears of Shizugatake' — the seven warriors who won spectacular merit fighting for Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583. While Nagayasu became one of the less celebrated figures among that illustrious group — surviving as a modest daimyo while his compatriots became great lords — his steady, reliable character is reflected in this sword's quiet reputation. Among Yoshimitsu's tantō, Hirano Tōshirō is the one that specialists point to as the most 'standard' of his masterworks — not extreme in any direction, but perfect in every dimension. The Awataguchi school's philosophy was not flash but depth: a brilliance that reveals itself slowly, the more carefully you look. Hirano Tōshirō embodies this philosophy completely, and the samurai who carried it were carrying something made not to impress at a glance, but to be understood over a lifetime.
