The Genki-Tenshō era (1570–1596) was the final flourishing of the kotō age. Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaigns drove sword demand to historic peaks; Mino's Sue-Mino smiths and Bizen's Sue-Bizen workshops both reached their operational heights. The Keichō earthquake of 1596 then annihilated the Bizen workshops, drawing a definitive line under the kotō era.

The Genki-Tenshō era (1570–1596) represents the fiery final chapter of the kotō age. Oda Nobunaga's military campaigns — from Anegawa (1570) to the battle of Nagashino (1575) — and Toyotomi Hideyoshi's subsequent unification drove sword demand to unprecedented levels. Mino's Sue-Mino smiths, especially Magoroku Kanemoto (famed as 'Seki no Magoroku') and Izumi-no-kami Kanesada ('Nosada'), supplied the wartime market with both battlefield blades and artistically refined custom pieces. Bizen's Sue-Bizen workshops under the Sukesada and Tadamitsu lineages maintained high-volume output through the period. Hideyoshi's Sword Hunt Edicts (1588) simultaneously codified the sword as an exclusively warrior-class symbol, elevating its social significance just as production was reaching saturation. Then in 1596, the Keichō earthquake devastated the Osafune workshops, destroying centuries of accumulated infrastructure and effectively ending Bizen as a sword-producing center. This convergence of peak production and sudden catastrophic destruction makes the Genki-Tenshō era both the culmination and the conclusion of the ancient kotō tradition.
