Gassan Toda Castle
Présentation
Gassan Toda Castle is one of Japan's supreme medieval mountain fortresses, occupying the entire craggy peak of Mount Gassan (183m) in Shimane Prefecture, with the Iinashi River wrapping three sides as a natural moat. For approximately 130 years it served as the base of the Amago clan, masters of the San'in region who at their height controlled eight provinces of Chūgoku. The legendary strategist Amago Tsunehisa transformed it into an impregnable stronghold. In 1566, Mōri Motonari finally reduced it through a three-year siege — the castle's formidable defenses proved no match for slow starvation. After the Amago clan's fall, the devoted retainer Yamanaka Shikanosuke launched repeated, doomed campaigns to restore his lords, praying famously to the crescent moon for 'seven hardships and eight sufferings' — becoming one of Japanese history's most beloved symbols of loyal resolve.
Lien avec les sabres
Gassan Toda Castle's sword connections are inseparable from Izumo Province's identity as Japan's 'land of iron.' The Chūgoku Mountains held vast deposits of iron sand (satetsu), fueling the distinctive 'tatara' smelting industry that supplied high-quality tamahagane (sword steel) to smiths across Japan. The Amago clan's control of this iron economy was a pillar of their military power. The castle's very name connects to the celebrated Gassan school of swordsmiths — active since the late Heian period — whose blades are instantly recognizable by their 'ayasugi-hada,' a mesmerizing woodgrain-like surface pattern unique in Japanese swordsmithing. Modern Yasugi City is home to Yasuki Steel (now Proterial), whose specialty steel is used in high-end kitchen knives worldwide — a living legacy of the region's iron heritage stretching from medieval tatara furnaces to global precision manufacturing.
