来国信
Rai Kuninobu
Description
Rai Kuninobu was a master swordsmith of the late Kamakura period (c. 1259–1301), active in Yamashiro Province (present-day Kyoto) and one of the central figures of the celebrated Rai school. The Rai school, founded by Rai Kuniyuki, represents the pinnacle of Yamashiro-den — the elegant, refined sword-making tradition of the ancient capital. Kuninobu's blades are distinguished by their fine ko-itame jihada with the characteristic Rai-school "shirake utsuri" — a pale, misty reflection that gives Rai blades their uniquely luminous, aristocratic quality. His hamon is primarily suguha with ko-midare and ko-choji, filled with delicate nie that create a tranquil yet lively hamon edge. Among the Rai masters, Kuninobu's work is noted for slightly bolder nie activity, giving his blades an energy that transcends the pure quietude typical of the school. His tachi are particularly celebrated, featuring deep koshi-zori, harmonious proportions, and small kissaki that embody the classical Kamakura tachi ideal. Several of his works are designated Important Cultural Properties in Japan. DATEKATANA presents Rai Kuninobu as a master of the Yamashiro aesthetic tradition, whose blades represent the refined courtly beauty of medieval Kyoto sword-making at its finest.
