Okayama Prefectural Museum
Überblick
A Museum at the Heart of Bizen Sword Country
Okayama Prefectural Museum opened in 1971 adjacent to Kōrakuen, one of Japan's Three Great Gardens, on the banks of the Asahigawa river within view of Okayama Castle. Okayama Prefecture was historically Bizen Province — one of the five great sword traditions (gokaden), the Bizen tradition, was born here. From the Kamakura period through the Edo period, the Bizen Osafune school supplied blades to the entire country.
The Bizen Sword Collection
The museum's sword holdings systematically represent the Bizen tradition. Its characteristic small-grain itame jigane (steel grain), clear utsuri (misty reflection), and hamon ranging from choji to gunome to ko-midare are illustrated across blades from the Ichimonji school (Kamakura), the Osafune school (Kamakura–Nanbokuchō), Kanemitsu and Nagayoshi (Nanbokuchō), and sue-Bizen works (Muromachi). Multiple Important Cultural Property blades are included, making this the ideal museum for mastering the Bizen tradition.
The Ikeda Clan and Okayama Domain
Okayama domain lord Ikeda Mitsumasa built Kōrakuen; the museum holds Ikeda-family swords, armor, and domain-era documents, illuminating the warrior culture of Bizen in the Edo period.
Visiting with Kōrakuen and Okayama Castle
Kōrakuen, built in 1700 by Ikeda Tsunamasa, and Okayama Castle (the Black Castle) are a 5-minute walk from the museum. Together they form one of Japan's most rewarding day-trip destinations for Japanese culture and history. The museum is accessible by tram from Okayama Station.
